The 849 comes in a snazzy, low profile metal case with a medium point, blue Goliath ballpoint cartridge. I'm not a fan of medium points so I ordered a fine point refill, however the medium point is not overly broad. From the photos it seems that the barrel has a matte finish but it is very smooth and glossy. The pen is not hefty yet it is not so light that it feels cheap.
While writing the ink flows smoothly regardless of pressure or speed. I tend to write with a light hand and I have not had issues with globs or missed strokes.
My biggest concern is that I'm going to misplace it. Good thing it comes with the case!

I have been using the same 849 Caran d'Ache ballpoint pen for years now . . . each massive refill also can last me more than a year w/ no globbing of ink, etc
